Rolex Submariner 18K Unpolished Purple Dial - Ref 1680/8

This exceptional 1979 vintage Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 is crafted in 18-karat gold and fitted with the highly desirable “nipple” dial. Preserved in original, unpolished condition, the watch retains sharp case lines, full proportions, and original factory geometry; qualities that have become increasingly difficult to find and are especially prized by collectors.

While not offered as a complete set, the watch is accompanied by both its inner and outer boxes, as well as a Rolex service card dated October 14, 2011. Notably, the original caseback sticker remains intact, further supporting the watch’s originality and provenance. The dial is in very good condition, displaying light patina with an attractive royal blue tone accented by subtle purple undertones. The case, bezel, insert, caseback, crystal, and crown are likewise in very good condition, showing only minor wear consistent with careful ownership and use. The bezel insert appears to be a later replacement.

The model and serial numbers remain crisp as do the hallmarks which are fully legible, with no bracelet scratches or marks between the lugs, suggesting the watch was likely originally delivered on a strap. It is currently fitted with a Tropic-style rubber strap as well with a blue leather strap with Rolex plaque buckle.

In summary, this solid gold Submariner 1680 combines a striking blue dial with a distinctive purple “effervescence,” an unpolished and sharply preserved case, and strong originality throughout, making it a highly collectible and increasingly scarce example of an iconic reference.
