Easily identified by its signature twin crowns at 2 and 4 o’clock, the Supercompressor case is a hallmark of ‘60s and '70s dive watch design. Developed by Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA), this innovative case used increasing water pressure to tighten the seal—enhancing water resistance as the watch went deeper. Because EPSA supplied cases to many brands, supercompressors came in a wide range of dial and hand designs. Their distinctive look and everyday wearability have earned them a strong cult following. The most coveted models include the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris, Universal Genève Polerouter Sub, and Longines Diver Ref. 7042. These stand out not only for their heritage and quality but also for their larger 42mm case size—unusual for the era, when 36mm was standard. Even today, these 42mm watches feel bold and substantial on the wrist.
One often-overlooked brand that also made 42mm supercompressors is Bulova. While Bulova's 36mm models are already rare, the 42mm version is exceptionally hard to find—and still surprisingly affordable. With such rarity and presence, these Bulova supercompressors remain an underrated gem, at least for now.
This example presents in New Old Stock condition. The stainless steel case exhibits sharp, symmetrical lugs with no wear, and the caseback retains all original factory engravings—an increasingly uncommon detail. Both crosshatched crowns, correct to the EPSA supercompressor design, are present and function as intended.
The dial remains glossy and retains its original tritium-based green luminous material, which exhibits a consistent patina. The internal rotating timing bezel operates smoothly via the upper crown, and the movement is in clean condition, functioning within accepted tolerances for vintage mechanical calibres. Notably, the watch is fitted with its original vintage 22mm Tropic rubber strap.
